Midweek Meditation: My Baptismal Birthday

To switch it up today, and perhaps because we had baptisms this past Sunday, I thought I’d share a poem. This is by Samuel Coleridge, an author and Christian from the 18-19thth century. Its theology is rich and warm!

“God's child in Christ adopted,--Christ my all,--
What that earth boasts were not lost cheaply, rather
Than forfeit that blest name, by which I call
The Holy One, the Almighty God, my Father?--
Father! in Christ we live, and Christ in Thee--
Eternal Thou, and everlasting we.
The heir of heaven, henceforth I fear not death:
In Christ I live! in Christ I draw the breath
Of the true life!--Let then earth, sea, and sky
Make war against me! On my heart I show
Their mighty master's seal. In vain they try
To end my life, that can but end its woe.--
Is that a death-bed where a Christian lies?--
Yes! but not his--'tis Death itself there dies.”

And all God’s people said?

 

Ministry Prayer Requests

·      Pray that we keep congregational commitments to one-another.

·      Pray for grace in parenting.

·      Pray for the cultivation of Christian friendships in our church.

 

Ministry Reminders

·      Come for our Family Bible Study on Wednesday. This week we will continue inductively studying 1 John 2.

·      Check bulletins and the Weekly updates for upcoming ladies and men’s ministries events.

·      Our annual meeting is the evening of August 9th. Information for this meeting can be collected in the foyer.

 

Book Recommendations

·      Habits of Grace- David Mathis
This is one of the best books on faithfulness to Christian disciplines out there. David Mathis, whom I’ve recently befriended, provides a great resource fir growing in the Christian basics.  

·      Piercing Heaven
 This is a collection of puritan prayers and meditations. I pray one or more in my office most every day. I would encourage you to add 1 or two to your time with the Lord. It will be so enriching for you!
